GOSPA OD ŠKRPJELA
Description
Program: Irena Popović (1974) Libretto: Jelena Novak Our Lady of the Rocks, chamber opera for children's voices, narrator, operatic voice and chamber ensemble Roles: Jacinta – Natalija Radić Jacinta as a girl – Doris Franović Narration: Dubravka Drakić Waiting for her husband to return from sailing, Jacinta Kunić from Perast made a tapestry. In addition to damask and pearls of different colors, Jacinta also used strands of her hair to make the tapestry. For 25 long years, she dedicatedly embroidered the tapestry, hoping to meet her husband who never returned from sailing. Legend has it that Jacinta lost her sight while embroidering the tapestry. The overture is characterized by alternating stormy and intimate sections that metaphorically represent the life of a woman who, in her deep pain, nevertheless survives, tirelessly and dedicatedly weaving a tapestry as a symbol of her love for the man she will never shake again. Three voices will guide us through the opera: the narrator - an actress, an opera voice and a girl's voice, who will tell one of the most poignant legends of Boka through poetic images. Jacinta, as the narrator today, remembers her childhood when she was a little girl, and as an adult (an opera singer) she has no idea that life in a closed world will come to the world. In the libretto, past and present alternate, dream and reality, and the most beautiful verses of women's poetry are also encountered. The long 25 years of anxiety, waiting, anticipation and loneliness are also accompanied by the Boka chamber ensemble, which, in addition to playing parts, will also have parts that are spoken or whispered, thus becoming the multiplied voice of Jacinta. The opera departs from the expected impostor voices and turns into a kind of cry and the voice of all beings who wait faithfully.
